Regeneration for Dún Laoghaire

Vacant ShopsThere’s an interesting discussion of regeneration happening on 19th June 2014, as part of the Dalkey Book Festival. Here’s what they have to say:

“House prices in Dun Laoghaire are rocketing again, yet the town is boarded up. The Council spends millions on a library, but businesses are closing down. Is Dun Laoghaire beyond hope? A place of broken windows, empty shops and fewer and fewer people shopping in what used to be a bustling, dynamic town. Can this decline be reversed? Who should do it? And how?

“We are delighted to host possibly the world’s foremost expert on urban regeneration, Bruce Katz. Former Chief of Staff of the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, Bruce Katz is the author of “The Metropolitan Revolution”. Currently visiting professor of the LSE, he comes to Dalkey to discuss urban regeneration with the locals. Our chair, Ann Marie Hourihane of The Irish Times will be joined by local actor Eamonn Morrissey, local historian Peter Pearson and owner of Harry’s Cafe, Derek Bennett.

This is one not to be missed for anyone with an interest in the prosperity and wellbeing of this neck of the woods.”
